Weight limits, rack compatibility, and setup time — everything you need to pick the right RTT for your Tacoma build.
The Toyota Tacoma's factory roof rack is rated for 200 lbs dynamic (vehicle in motion). Most rooftop tents weigh 80–130 lbs before you add the mattress, your sleeping bag, and two adults. You need an aftermarket rack before mounting an RTT. Budget $800–$1,400 for the rack; consider it part of the RTT cost.
Hard shells (iKamper, Roofnest) open in under 60 seconds, seal tight against rain, and have better aerodynamics. They cost more and weigh more. Soft shells (Tepui, 23Zero) are lighter, cheaper, and give more interior headroom per dollar — but take 3–5 minutes to set up and pack down.
Tent weight does not equal total load. Add: tent + 2 adults (350 lbs) + gear inside. A 1,500 lb dynamic roof rack rating with a Tepui Kukenam 3 and two adults puts you at roughly 600 lbs dynamic — well within spec on a quality aftermarket rack.
If you're choosing between the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 and the 23Zero Walkabout, the 44 lb difference matters more than the price difference. Every pound on the roof raises your center of gravity and affects handling, especially on trails. The Walkabout at 88 lbs gives the same sleeping space for significantly less roof weight.
